When Cheapass Games printed the latest edition of Lord of the Fries, we also made a Pairs deck with some of the art. The Lord of the Fries deck features a cast of Zombies making various kinds of food, ranging from Mexican to Chinese, Irish to American. This deck also comes with a bluffing game for 2-6 players, Deadfall.
Pairs is a "New Classic Pub Game" featuring an unusual deck of cards. The deck has only the numbers 1 through 10, with a different number of each card: 1x1, 2x2, 3x3, and so on, up to 10x10.
In the basic game, points are bad, and you score points by getting a pair. So, if you have a 10, there are 9 other cards that could pair it up, and you'll get 10 penalty points if you do. Players take turns deciding whether to take another card, or fold, trying to avoid scoring points. When you fold, you have to take points, but only the smallest card in play.
Deadfall is a bluffing game somewhat like Liar's Dice. Players start with 6 cards in hand, and play cards one at a time trying not to play the last of a given rank. If you challenge another player, the hand is over; if that was the last card of that rank, you win, but if there are more, you lose. The penalty rises with the rank of the card, so be careful when you call the big numbers!
Deadfall is so fun that we are also making a new deck specifically for this game in 2016. Here's a short discussion of it in the Kill Doctor Lucky Kickstarter campaign, Update #7.
Pairs was designed by veteran game inventors James Ernest and Paul Peterson, and released in October 2014. There are many different art decks to choose from, but they all work for the same game (and many variant games!)
